The People of Rome - A Discussion on Ancient DNA and the Roman Empire on the Byzantium and Friends Podcast
Earlier this year, I was lucky enough to go on the Byzantium and Friends podcast, hosted by Anthony Kaldellis, a Professor at the University of Chicago. You can learn more about his work here - https://kaldellispublications.weebly.com/
Here's the podcast https://www.medievalists.net/2025/01/the-genetic-history-of-rome-with-hannah-moots/
We mostly discussed the population of Rome, what we can learn from ancient DNA, and how we can connect that with the archaeological and historical record.
A lot of the genetic results we discussed are from a project that was the focus of my PhD work, you can read more here: https://doi.org/10.1126/science.aay6826
I've always loved the cover the journal picked to go with the story, a long exposure of the Colosseum in Rome, with the passing carlights representing the passage of time.
